Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing Therapy is a tool that has become integral to supporting my clients who still grapple with horrific and traumatic memories, images, and past experiences that continue to show up and plague them in their present life. This therapy is designed to heal the emotional distress resulting from traumatic memories. In addition, it is effective in treating co-occurring disorders resulting from trauma.
EMDR engages similar brain mechanisms as those that are involved in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The repeated redirection of attention caused by the eye movements used during EMDR therapy creates a neurobiological state that resembles REM sleep. Together, with this technique, we work on reprocessing traumatic and emotionally charged memories so that they feel less overwhelming.
During this guided processing strategy, the client is prompted to notice whatever thoughts, feelings, images, memories, or sensations may arise. The eye movements prompt the brain to make associations and neural connections that help integrate the traumatic memories. If effective, the distress associated with the memory begins to dissipate and dissolve.
Separately from trauma & PTSD, EMDR has been shown to be effective over time in reducing symptoms of the following conditions:
* Stress caused by chronic disease
* Eating Disorders
* Panic Attacks
* Addiction
* Phobias
